Woman arrested on suspicion of abusing and hurting a child

On Tuesday, January 3, 2022, a 31-year-old lady is scheduled to make her initial court appearance at the George Magistrates’ court in the Western Cape in connection with the attack of a toddler.

The woman was detained following the discovery of bruises and an open cut on a child placed in her care.

An inquiry conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) indicated that the mother of the two-year-old boy left him in the care of relatives in Rosedale near Pacaltsdorp in George on Tuesday, 27 December 2022.

The mother observed facial injuries upon her return and took her child to the local hospital for treatment. Later, medical workers summoned police and discovered the child with facial injuries, an open wound, and bruises around the eyes caused by an unknown object.

Thursday, December 29, detectives from the George Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offenses (FCS) unit detained the suspect, a relative of the mother, on a charge of child abuse, according to police spokesman Sergeant Christopher Spies.

According to spies, the woman remains in police custody and is due to make her first court appearance on the specified charge on Tuesday, January 3, 2023.

Similarly, on Monday, December 26, 2022, the Oudtshoorn Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offenses (FCS) unit arrested a 31-year-old male on charges of assault with the purpose to do severe bodily harm and child abuse.

The suspect is accused of assaulting his one-year-old son on Saturday, December 24, 2022, in Bridgeton, Heidebloem Lane, Oudtshoorn.

According to spies, the accused made his initial court appearance on the specified charge on Wednesday, 28 December 2022. The case was adjourned to January 4, 2022, for further investigation, and the defendant was remanded in custody.

On multiple social media platforms, a video of the incident has been uploaded. Police have already requested the public not to distribute the video in order to protect the victim’s identity.

When apprehended, people who jeopardize the safety of children will face the full force of the law, according to the Western Cape police command.
