UK police charged two teenagers with the weekend murder of a 16-year-old transgender girl

Police in the United Kingdom said on Wednesday that two adolescents have been charged with the murder of a 16-year-old transgender girl over the weekend, a case that has garnered national attention.

Saturday, Brianna Ghey was tragically stabbed in Warrington, northwest England. That afternoon, members of the public discovered her on a trail in a park.

On Sunday, Cheshire Police detained two 15-year-olds from neighbouring Leigh; on Wednesday, they were charged with her murder.

They were scheduled to appear later that day at Chester Magistrates’ Court.

The police department had earlier said that it was investigating if Ghey was the victim of a transphobic crime.

In remembrance of Ghey, who had a significant following on the social networking platform TikTok, candlelight vigils have been held around the nation, including in neighbouring Liverpool on Tuesday evening.

In the next days, the transgender community was scheduled to host more gatherings in London, Glasgow, Leeds, and Belfast.

One day after its creation, a GoFundMe campaign supporting Ghey’s family had raised more than £75,000 ($91,000).

In a statement released following her passing, her family described her as a “much-loved daughter, granddaughter, and baby sister.”

The statement added: “Brianna was beautiful, witty and hilarious. Brianna was strong, fearless and one of a kind.

“The loss of her young life has left a massive hole in our family, and we know that the teachers and her friends who were involved in her life will feel the same.”
