A 14-year-old Texas girl has been charged with murder after accidentally shooting and killing an 11-year-old boy during a quarrel with another girl.

Sunday about 2:00 p.m., officers were sent to the Cedar Crest neighborhood of Dallas in response to reports of gunfire at the Southern Oaks Apartments.

They learned that two girls were arguing in the parking lot, and that one of them, a 14-year-old, “retrieved a handgun and fired toward the direction of the female she was fighting,” according to Dallas Police Department Sergeant Warren Mitchell.

She missed and shot D’evan McFall instead. He was rushed to the hospital, but his injuries proved fatal.

ABC News said that the 14-year-old ran away to a nearby housing complex, but was then apprehended and prosecuted.

She is being held at the Henry Wade Juvenile Justice Center at this time. Police did not specify if the suspect resided in the apartment building or where she obtained the weapon.

Mitchell said, “This is a horrible incident.” He said that homicide investigators have acquired the murder weapon and are now interviewing witnesses.

He said that gang participation was not suspected, but that a dispute between two juveniles led to a fatal end.

The tragedy occurred one week after a six-year-old boy in Newport News, Virginia brought a gun from home to school and shot his teacher.

The boy shot Abigail Zwerner, 25 years old, in the chest. Her injuries were first characterized as being life-threatening, but her status is now stable.
