South African radio veteran Mark Pilgrim dies at 53

Mark Pilgrim, a well-known South African radio presenter, has passed away at the age of 53 after a courageous battle with stage four cancer. He died on March 5th in the presence of his fiancée, Adrienne Watkins.

According to Leeroy Marundai, Pilgrim’s managing director at HOT 102.7FM, when he was diagnosed with cancer last year, he was given three months to live. However, Pilgrim fought for much longer and was determined to try everything to battle the illness.

Despite his deteriorating health, Pilgrim continued communicating with Marundai and others at the radio station until Saturday. On Sunday, HOT 102.7 confirmed Pilgrim’s death and paid tribute to him.

They described Pilgrim as a fighter who battled valiantly until the end. They also thanked his family, friends, and fans for their support.

Pilgrim first battled cancer when he was 18 years old and was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1988. After enduring surgery and months-long chemotherapy, he was declared in remission.

However, his cancer returned 33 years later in 2022, and he documented his journey across all his social media accounts. He shared his progress and treatment with his fans and revealed that all the tumors in his leg, lung, spine, and lymph nodes were shrinking after weeks of treatment.

In June, Pilgrim was diagnosed with COVID-19 but eventually recovered. He continued to share his medical journey with his fans, including a collapsed lung, undergoing surgery, and a step closer to being home.

Pilgrim also shared his personal life, including his proposal to his fiancée Adrienne Watkins, who supported him throughout his journey.

Despite his determination and courage, Pilgrim’s condition deteriorated, and he passed away on March 5th in the presence of his fiancée. Pilgrim’s family, friends, and fans remember him as a fighter who battled cancer with everything he had.
