Nottingham Forest and Newcastle are interested buying goalkeeper Dean Henderson

Nottingham Forest and Manchester United have begun talks to sign goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who is interested in the transfer.

According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano, recently promoted Forest want to sign Henderson on loan with the option to buy him for roughly £20 million.

However, Forest may face competition for Henderson, with Newcastle also allegedly interested in the keeper.

Henderson wants to play first-team football, which will be difficult to achieve at Old Trafford given David de Gea’s recent form rise.

The United academy graduate rose to prominence a few seasons ago after two successful loan periods at Sheffield United, when he helped the Blades win promotion from the Championship and subsequently secure their Premier League survival with a ninth-place finish.

Following that, he was promoted to the Red Devils’ first team, and after a string of outstanding performances, he surpassed the struggling De Gea in the pecking order, earning a spot in England’s Euro 2020 squad.

Henderson was praised as a world-class goalkeeper by then-Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who predicted: ‘He will be England’s No.1 and Man United’s No.1 at some point.’

Henderson sustained a significant hip injury at the Euros before catching COVID-19 shortly before the start of the season, and in his absence De Gea recaptured his job, and the Spaniard’s inspired form limited Henderson to just three appearances.

While new United manager Erik ten Hag is still assessing his team, Henderson is anticipated to move, either on loan or permanently, in order to gain game time, with a spot in England’s World Cup squad at risk.

Everton’s Jordan Pickford and Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale are Gareth Southgate’s first two choices in goal, but the third spot is up for grabs, with Burnley’s Nick Pope and former West Brom keeper Sam Johnstone all pushing for a seat on the plane to Qatar.
