After a 23-year absence, Nottingham Forest made their Premier League comeback, and judging by their summer buying binge, they are keen to remain there after signing an English record 21 players in a single transfer window.

On the day of the deadline for transfers on Thursday, the newly promoted team finalised agreements for defender Willy Boly of Wolverhampton Wanderers, winger Josh Bowler of Blackpool (who was loaned to Olympiakos in Greece), and defender Loic Bade on loan from Rennes.

According to specialised website Transfermarkt, the previous English record for the most signings in a single transfer window was set by Crystal Palace in the summer of 2013 with 17.

Almost $173 million has been spent by Forest, who gained promotion via the Championship playoffs, to rebuild a club that has been decimated by the departures of five players on free transfers and five players on loan.

The East Midlands club also spent heavily to recruit striker Taiwo Awoniyi and defender Neco Williams for 18 million pounds apiece, shattering their previous transfer record in the process.

Jesse Lingard of England, who arrived on a free transfer, goalkeeper Dean Henderson, and left defender Renan Lodi, who joined on loans from Manchester United and Atletico Madrid, are among the other notable newcomers.

Prior to their trip to Everton on Saturday, Forest, who are managed by Steve Cooper, have four points from their first five games and are now ranked 15th in the league.
