Holders Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies will look to advance to the semi-finals of the 2017 CAF Women’s Champions League when they face Wadi Degla of Egypt in their second Group B match.
The Brazilians defeated the Bayelsa Queens of Nigeria 2-1 in their Group B opener on Monday, thanks to a brace from Lelona Daweti.
Following the match, Coach Jerry ‘Kappa’ Tshabalala lauded his team’s resiliency against the debutants.
“It was not an easy encounter for us, as games against Nigerian sides are notoriously difficult due to their extraordinary stamina. Although we had limited information from them prior to the game, we remained firm and achieved the desired outcome. The players deserve credit for adhering to the game plan and scoring when it counted. It is always advantageous to begin a tournament of this nature with a victory. “Mentally, we are prepared for our upcoming opponents,” remarked Kappa.
Prior to the match against Wadi Degla of Egypt, Coach Jerry believes his team must be clinical in front of goal.
“We are aware that they will be eager for three points after losing their first game to TP Mazembe. Therefore, we must dominate possession in key areas and capitalize on our opportunities. This game will necessitate a constant pressing effort because they are a very fit team. We intend to leave nothing on the field because we are determined to defend our championship. To become champions once more, we will be tested on all fronts; therefore, our next objective is to defeat the Egyptian champions,” concluded Kappa.
With the loss to TP Mazembe in Group B’s opening match, Wadi Degla has now lost their last three matches at the continent’s premier women’s tournament (D1 L2). In 2021, they drew their last group match against Hasaacas Ladies after losing their second match against Malabo Kings.
The match between Sundowns Ladies and Wadi Degla of Egypt will take place on November 3 at Stade de Marrakech. The match will begin at 18:00. (SAST).
