Steve Bannon surrenders to New York police

Thursday morning, former Trump adviser Steve Bannon surrendered to New York state prosecutors. Bannon is facing criminal charges for his role in the “Build the Wall” organization, which solicited millions of dollars on the promise of constructing a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, but allegedly pocketed some of those payments.

Thursday afternoon, the Manhattan district attorney and the New York attorney general will conduct a press conference to announce his anticipated indictment.

New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement, “There cannot be one set of regulations for common people and another for the affluent and powerful; we all must play by the same rules and uphold the law.”

“Mr. Bannon used the political beliefs of his donors to obtain millions of dollars, which he then misappropriated. Mr. Bannon deceived his donors in order to profit himself and his associates. Because no one is above the law, we will continue to combat fraudulent behavior in every sector of society, including white collar offenders. I appreciate District Attorney Bragg’s close collaboration on this subject and applaud the Attorney General’s Office and the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office for their tireless efforts.”

Bannon issued his own statement in anticipation of his Monday indictment.

“Just days after being swatted three times by deranged New York City thugs inspired by the Biden Administration to assassinate me by police, the Soros-backed DA has decided to pursue phony charges against me 60 days before the midterm election because WarRoom is the primary source of the MAGA grassroots movement,” Bannon said in the statement.

Bannon faced identical accusations in federal court in 2020, but then-President Trump pardoned him during his last days in office.

Bannon was found guilty of contempt of Congress in July for refusing to appear before a House committee investigating the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Next month, he might face up to two years in prison when he is sentenced.
