Hillary Ronen, a progressive liberal politician, is among the 11 supervisors who will decide on a reparations plan for San Francisco’s black residents.
The plan promises to pay each eligible adult $5 million, wipe away personal debt, and provide guaranteed annual incomes of at least $97,000 for 250 years.
Ronen, a graduate of Berkley Law, is eager to implement the plan, despite the lack of clarity on where the city will find the funds to pay for it.
However, the plan has faced criticism, with former BLM activists branding it “unrealistic and disgusting.”
Ronen is also a proponent of defunding the police, despite escalating crime and homelessness in the city.
She believes that some migrant fentanyl dealers are human trafficking victims and opposes locating two fugitives wanted for crimes committed in San Francisco in 2009, as it would require an exception to the city’s sanctuary city policy.
Ronen is a fierce supporter of former DA Chesa Boudin, who abolished cash bail for criminals and allowed open-air drug markets to pop up across the city.
She has also proposed a resolution to legalize sex work across the entire state.
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors will revisit the reparations plan later this year, once the committee which put forward the draft plan has submitted a final report.
Another meeting has been scheduled for September.
The board signaled its enthusiasm for the plan, with Supervisor Walton saying that black folks were done wrong in San Francisco, and all of that can really be traced back to the negative effects of slavery.
Sgt. Yulanda Williams, the president of the police association Officers for Justice, urged the board to provide reparations, saying, “It is time for you to do the right thing and make us whole.”
The plan’s recommendations also include providing homes in San Francisco for just $1 a family.
