The severe weather in Texas chilled a bat colony.
Overnight on Thursday, as temperatures dipped into the 20s, more than 100 bats froze in place beneath a bridge that has become a favorite spot for bat watching.
According to KHOU11, the Houston Humane Society recovered 138 frozen bats from the Waugh Street Bridge.
The organization is rehabilitating the animals after Thursday’s temperature drop. In addition, the organization is aiming to bat-proof the area by installing rubber padding to soften the bats’ falls and providing warming boxes for those that are saved.
Mary Warwick, the director of the organization, is a specialist on bats, which is fortunate for the winged mammals. She reported to Fox 26 that 99 percent of the bats were alive and moving.
The Waugh Drive Bridge is home to an estimated 250,000 Mexican free-tailed bats and is located less than two miles from downtown Houston.
