SA bats first in second ODI without Temba Bavuma and Tabraiz Shamsi

Temba Bavuma and Tabraiz Shamsi were omitted from the Proteas starting lineup for the second ODI against India in Ranchi on Sunday due to a “mild infection,” according to the team’s management.

In Bavuma’s absence, Keshav Maharaj assumed the role of captain and elected to bat. Reeza Hendricks, who was one of the Proteas’ finest performers in their T20 series victories against England and Ireland earlier this year, replaces Bavuma at no. 3, while Bjorn Fortuin replaces Shamsi.

Lungi Ngidi was replaced by Anrich Nortje in the third substitution.

Both Bavuma and Shamsi were under pressure after dismal performances in the opening match, which the Proteas won by nine runs last Thursday. The team management stated that the pair would be allowed time to recover, with Fortuin, Rilee Rossouw, and Tristan Stubbs, all members of the Twenty20 squad, called up as replacements for the last two ODIs.

India made two changes from their first encounter, with all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed, age 27, making his debut. Ravi Bishnoi and Ruturaj Gaikwad were replaced by Washington Sundar, while Ravi Bishnoi and Ruturaj Gaikwad were dropped.
