Most voters feel U.S. democracy is collapsing

A recent survey found that both Democrats and Republicans agree that democracy is under danger.

According to a study conducted by Quinnipiac University and released on Wednesday, 67 percent of those polled said democracy was in danger.

72% of registered Democratic voters and 70% of registered Republican voters were included in that figure.

Information was made public shortly before President Joe Biden’s key set-piece address on Thursday, which the White House refers to as the “fight for the soul of the nation” and in which he is likely to criticise Donald Trump and his supporters for weakening the country’s democracy.

Meanwhile, Trump has been claiming that Biden politicised the FBI in an attempt to oust him from the 2024 presidential race before it even got underway.

As a consequence, both the left and right present their adversaries as a danger to democracy.

“In a rare instance of unanimity, Americans come together behind a foreboding worry.” Tim Malloy, a polling analyst at Quinnipiac University, said that democracy, the foundation of the country, is under danger.

The percentage of Americans who worry for democracy has increased nine points since January, according to a study of 1584 respondents.

Threats to democracy were identified as the most pressing concern confronting the nation in a recent NBC News survey.

Threats to democracy were named as the most critical concern by almost 21% of respondents, ahead of cost of living at 16% and employment and the economy at 14%.

That will serve as the setting for Biden’s address in Philadelphia on Thursday at 8 p.m.

He is anticipated to use his disgust at how Trump supporters destroyed the U.S. Capitol in an effort to rig the 2020 election to portray Democrats as the protectors of democracy.

Additionally, a representative said to the Associated Press that he will use the 2017 white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, to support his claims.

The day before the address, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that “when we speak about our democracy, when we talk about our liberties, the way that he sees it is the MAGA Republicans are the most excited portion of the Republican Party.”

“This is a grave danger to our freedom, democracy, and liberties.”

In order for his party to win the House and the Senate in November’s midterm elections, Biden is placing democracy at the forefront of the effort.

Last week, he criticised a “extreme MAGA attitude” at a fundraiser in Maryland, using the acronym for Donald Trump and his Make America Great Again campaign. He said it was “almost like semi-fascism.”

He referred to the Trump supporters’ assaults on the FBI as’sickening’ on Tuesday.

Republicans are upset about this because they believe Biden is disparaging tens of millions of regular people who want greater control over how their lives are run.

Prior to the president’s address, House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy will make a “prebuttal.”

In a morning TV interview, he said that Biden was attempting to divert attention away from the nation’s chronic inflation and other economic problems.

He said during an interview on Fox and Friends that “Joe Biden’s issue is that he does not comprehend the essence of America.”

Tens of millions of law-abiding, industrious people who he denigrates just want to have a role in their children’s education, to attend school board meetings, to pay for petrol, to stop the inflationary trend, and to feel secure enough to walk the streets once again.

They want a more powerful, secure, and affluent America, and all he does is demonise them to draw attention away from the catastrophes.
