Chief MKO Abiola – A Martyr of Democracy:
President Tinubu paid tribute to Chief MKO Abiola, recognized as the rightful winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
Abiola was regarded as a martyr of democracy and the guardian of the sacred mandate that was unjustly nullified.
The Sacrifice of Chief MKO Abiola:
Highlighting Chief MKO Abiola’s unwavering dedication to democracy, President Tinubu emphasized that he chose to defend the ideals of democracy, even at the cost of his life.
Abiola refused an easier path of compromise and demonstrated that certain principles and ideals hold more value than one’s own existence.
Other Heroes of the Independence Struggle:
President Tinubu also recognized the contributions of other democracy champions.
Kudirat Abiola, the wife of Chief Abiola, stood beside the people and tragically lost her life while fighting for their cause.
Additionally, Pa Alfred Rewane and Major General Shehu Yar’Adua (retd) were acknowledged for their pursuit of democracy, paying the ultimate price at the hands of the military junta.
