The first of Kalani’s numerous seizures occurred in 2016 as a result of his medical condition. A doctor urged the surfer not to surf or drive months before his death, due to multiple episodes and concerns about the possibility of an untimely death.

My neurologist advised me to refrain from driving and surfing until I am no longer suffering seizures. I mean, I could surf, but if I had one and wasn’t rescued in time, I’d either die or become a vegetable due to lack of oxygen to my brain,’ Kalani wrote in June on Instagram.

Within a couple of months, I experienced a seizure while driving and another while in the water. Since a few years ago, I’ve had seizures while sleeping, and I’ve only had angels watching over me because I don’t know how I keep getting so lucky and surviving it all.

“It is time to organize these things so I can advance in life – at least I can skate and fish!” I’ve been getting a lot of questions concerning my position, so I wanted to give everyone an update.

I’ve been ignoring my health problems because I couldn’t believe it, but doing so has made them worse. My entire life has changed, and it’s not because of rejection, but because of redirection.

“Thank you, everyone, for your affection; I’m just glad to be alive and healthy.” It is not about what you desire, but what you have and how well you utilize it.

Kalani's life centered around skating and surfing. When asked in 2016 to choose between the two as a career, he answered, 'If it was life or death, and I had to choose skating or surfing, I'd choose death.'
