A New York City teen died on the Williamsburg Bridge while subway surfing on a train

Police say a 15-year-old boy died Monday evening while “subway surfing” aboard a train crossing the Williamsburg Bridge.

The adolescent was traveling on the roof of a northbound J train crossing the bridge at 6:45 p.m. when he hit his head on a structure, according to the NYPD.

He was pronounced dead at the spot after falling under the locomotive.

As officers investigated, the MTA suspended J and M train service between the Marcy Av and Delancey St-Essex St stations for several hours. The agency said that both trains continued to operate with delays past 11 p.m.

The identify of the victim has been concealed until family notification.

Several young adolescents were badly hurt or killed while subway surfing in 2012, as incidences of the dangerous conduct soared – in part owing to social media, according to statements made by officials in the summer.

According to MTA data, the number of subway surfing occurrences jumped by 560% from January to May 2022, from 68 to 449, compared to the same time in 2021.

In June, NYPD Transit Chief Jason Wilcox described subway surfing as “very dangerous” and observed that the vast majority of instances involved youths.

He stated at the time, “There is nothing amusing or humorous about this type of behavior, and we will continue to endeavor to dissuade it.”

Several incidents involving daring behavior occurred on the Williamsburg Bridge.

In early December, a 15-year-old kid died after falling from the roof of a J train and landing on an electrified third rail above the Williamsburg Bridge.

In August, a 15-year-old kid lost an arm after falling off a northbound R train in Jackson Heights at the 74th Street/Roosevelt Avenue station while attempting to subway surf.

His arm was severed from the elbow down, and the detached arm was discovered by first responders underneath the train.

Two months prior, another 15-year-old boy sustained significant brain injuries when he struck his head on the roof of a Queens 7 train. He was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition after being discovered unconscious on the railway car.

A 32-year-old man fell to his death from a northbound J train near the Essex Street and Williamsburg Bridge station in October 2021. According to terrified passengers, they saw the man “fall from the train and get driven over.”
