President Biden stated on Wednesday that according to U.S. military officials, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan at this time is “not a good idea.”
A day after the Chinese Foreign Ministry threatened to take “resolute and severe actions” if Pelosi went ahead with rumored plans to travel to Taiwan in the coming weeks, Mr. Biden made his remarks in a conversation with reporters.
In answer to a query regarding Pelosi’s alleged travel, the president stated, “Well, I think that the military feels it’s not a smart idea right now.
But I’m not sure what the situation’s state is.
The Trump refrained from telling Pelosi she shouldn’t visit Taiwan.
Pelosi was supposed to visit in April, but she had to reschedule after her COVID-19 test was positive.
She would be the highest-ranking American lawmaker to visit the close ally since Republican Newt Gingrich went there while he was House speaker 25 years ago.
Tuesday’s Financial Times article stated that Pelosi would proceed with her postponed trip to Taipei in the coming month.
Her office declined to comment, citing established security measures that prevent them from confirming or denying the speaker’s impending international travel.
A visit of this nature would “seriously undermine China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, profoundly harm the foundation of China-U.S. relations, and send a seriously erroneous signal to Taiwan independence forces,” according to Zhao Lijiang, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
The “One China” policy, which acknowledges Beijing as the government of China while allowing for informal connections and defense links with Taipei, has long been a priority for the United States. In recent years, China has increased its military provocations towards democratic, self-governing Taiwan in an effort to coerce it into acceding to Beijing’s demands that it join the communist mainland.
Additionally, Mr. Biden stated that he anticipated speaking with Chinese President Xi Jinping within the upcoming ten days.

Under President Donald Trump, billions of dollars’ worth of Chinese goods were subject to a 25% levy.

In order to combat inflation in the United States, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has urged for the elimination of some of these tariffs. Other members of the Biden administration, such as U.S.
Trade Representative Katherine Tai, have expressed caution about lowering tariffs in light of China’s failure to abide by its commitments to buy American goods.
On Wednesday, Mr. Biden dodged a question from a reporter about what he could say to Xi over tariffs.
“I’d tell him to have a good day,” Biden responded.
Regarding the continuation of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s nearly five-month-old war against Ukraine, Mr. Biden and Mr. Xi disagree.
