Ex-cop who reportedly fatally shot a wheelchair-bound man for theft has been indicted

Arizona’s Tucson — Indicted for manslaughter is a former Tucson police officer who was dismissed after it was claimed he shot an armed stealing suspect in a motorized wheelchair nine times last year.

Ryan Remington received a summons on Thursday, according to Pima County Attorney Laura Conover, and will be arraigned the following week.

Remington might get a term of three to twelve and a half years, according to the prosecution.

Mike Storie, Remington’s lawyer, said that his client was looking forward to an impartial jury deliberating the matter.

According to the victim’s family’s attorney John Bradley, they want to file a second civil lawsuit against Remington in the coming weeks.

Tucson police are terminated During the incident on November 29, Remington had been working there for four years. He was dismissed on January 5 as a result of what police deemed to be excessive use of force, according to an internal inquiry.

Authorities said that Remington’s body camera captured the incident, which left 61-year-old Richard Lee Richards dead at the scene.

KOLD-TV, a CBS station in Tucson, quotes Conover as saying, “This news today does not fill me with delight. No joy. I am unable to turn back time. Not for Mr. Richards, Mr. Remington, or any of his associates. But we must do all in our power to ensure that Pima County residents get justice.” According to the police, Remington was on a security detail at a Walmart when a loss prevention agent informed him that a guy reportedly stole a toolbox from the establishment while riding a mobility scooter.

Police said that Richards, who was subsequently recognized as the guy Remington and the shop employee had followed, was asked for a receipt.

According to reports, Richards stated, “Here’s my receipt,” took out a knife, and then continued walking toward a local home improvement shop.

Richards allegedly told Remington, “You’re going to have to shoot me if you want me to put down the knife.”

Richards reportedly disregarded Remington’s orders to drop the knife and stay outside the business before the officer was fatally shot and the suspect fell from his wheelchair.

After the incident, Remington is seen on surveillance footage handcuffing Richards.
