Teenager rams wheelchair-bound man despite signalling stop

After being seen on tape driving over a guy using an electric wheelchair while motioning for him to slow down, a Texas teenager was jailed.

Pablo Antonio Avila-Banagas, a 17-year-old man, was apprehended as he tried to escape the scene after seriously injuring his victim.

According to security footage provided by the police, the crippled guy could be seen going slowly beside a speed bump across a parking lot in North Austin.

Suddenly, a white pickup vehicle entered the frame, and the guy was waving his hand at the driver to ask him to slow down so he could cross.

Instead, without even making an effort to slow down, the car seems to strike the victim directly.

The video shows the guy and his wheelchair being carried beneath the car’s wheels and into the main road while no brake lights are visible.

The pickup driver then hits the curb, leaving chair debris all over the parking lot.

The crew of a passing Austin FD firetruck observed what was going on in front of them and instantly came to a halt to provide first aid. Moments later, the emergency services are on the scene.

According to Austin authorities, the victim was left with significant, maybe fatal injuries.

On September 9, six days after the incident, Avila-Banagas was arrested and charged with causing bodily harm to a handicapped person, failing to stop and offer help, and unauthorised possession of a handgun.
