Ariana DeBose made an appearance at the 2023 SAG Awards as a presenter.
She arrived at the show in an oversize pink suit jacket with matching pants and was all smiles on the red carpet.
This appearance comes a week after her opening performance at the BAFTA Awards went viral, during which she rapped a verse that named several female nominees, including Angela Bassett and Viola Davis.
Social media had a field day with the performance, particularly with the line, “Angela Bassett did the thing,” which quickly became a meme.
Shortly after the polarizing number, the “West Side Story” star deactivated her Twitter account but shared a cryptic message on Instagram that read, “Babygirl [sic], in a world full of choices, choose yourself.”
DeBose had a difficult week following her BAFTAs performance. Amid the backlash, Angela Bassett shared that she had contacted DeBose to check in on her.
She said, “I just wanted to make sure she was OK because, you know, it’s a lot of attention. And she is A-OK.”
Although Bassett couldn’t help poking fun at the rap when she won an award later that evening, DeBose has at least one celeb firmly in her corner.
Jamie Lee Curtis enthusiastically defended the Broadway star’s maligned performance at the Producers Guild Awards.
She told Deadline, “It was joyous, celebratory, sisterly, hot, spicy, and she’s so incredibly talented. … She is a fantastic talent.
People should shut the f–k up, back the f–k up, and let this woman shine her light. She is fantastic.”
DeBose won an Academy Award for her role in “West Side Story.”
Despite the backlash, she eventually found her sense of humour by commenting on a roundup of memes and tweets making fun of her performance.
She wrote, “Honestly, I love this,” on Monday.
