21-year-old horticulturist is nominated for the Queen Consort’s Coronation Champions Award

Danny Poland, a 21-year-old horticulturist, brought some cheer to his village during the lockdown by planting numerous sunflowers.

His efforts have now been recognised with a nomination for the Queen Consort’s Coronation Champions Award, which is being organised by the Royal Voluntary Service and supported by the Daily Mail.

Mr Poland’s initiative inspired residents of Irthington in Cumbria to form a Village in Bloom group, which earned a Silver Gilt in last year’s Britain in Bloom competition. For his contribution, Mr Poland was awarded a Young Persons Champion Award.

During the summer drought, he also delivered 150 to 200 litres of rainwater daily to the flowers he had planted around the village on a trailer attached to his bicycle.

Mail reader Gill Burns, 65, nominated Mr Poland for the award. She praised his inspiration and involvement in the village, which has benefited from his efforts.

Mr Poland, who works at Larch Cottage Nurseries while caring for his disabled mother, said he was thrilled to be put forward for the Coronation Champions award.

The Coronation Champions Awards will award 500 champions with a pin, a certificate from Camilla, and an invitation to one of the Coronation events. To nominate a volunteer, the public can visit www.royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk/coronation-champions-awards or see the panel for further information.

The nomination process requires identifying a volunteer, obtaining their permission, and filling out an online form with details of their volunteering activities over the past five years and how they have made a difference. Dr Eddy Hogg, one of the award judges, also shares tips on making a nomination stand out in a video on the website.
