Victor Gomes, who recently officiated at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, has been nominated for a prestigious award.
Gomes has been nominated for the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) Men’s World Best Referee award alongside 24 other referees from around the globe.
The victor will succeed Felix Brych of Germany.
According to The South African website, forty-year-old Gomes just announced his retirement from professional football officiating.
In Qatar, Gomes presided over two group stage matches.
He was the referee for France’s 4-1 victory against Australia as well as Spain’s shocking 2-1 loss to Japan.
Gomes also served as the fourth official during the quarterfinal match between eventual champions Argentina and the Netherlands.
Victor Gomes officiated the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final between Senegal and Egypt earlier this year.
Meanwhile, his final club assignment was the most recent DStv Premiership Soweto derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium.
