The 29th annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards will have a South African flavor next month.

The South African-based Stunteam has been nominated in the category of Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture for their work on the film The Woman King, which was released in 2022.

The Woman King is an American epic historical action drama film about the Agojie, an all-female military corps who guarded the West African kingdom of Dahomey between the 17th and 19th centuries.

Co-founders and directors of Stunteam with origins in Cape Town, Grant Powell and Vernon Willemse have a combined 24 years of experience in the film industry.

As combat choreographers and stunt performers, they have participated in a variety of local and international high-budget film and television productions.

This includes, among many others, Scorpion King 4, Death Race 3 – Inferno, Homeland, Dominion, Blacksails, Dread, Zulu, Mad Max, and Kite.

Willemse was born in Macassar while Powell was born in Mitchell’s Plain.

Powell and Willemse are up against four other blockbuster films for the honor, including Avatar: The Way of the Water, The Batman, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Top Gun: Maverick.

Viola Davis was nominated in the category of Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her role in The Woman King.

The 2019 SAG Awards will be held on Sunday, February 26.
