The suspected driver of the Mercedes Benz that sped through a busy intersection and struck several vehicles in the Windsor Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles County on Thursday was released from the hospital on Sunday and was being held at the Century Regional Detention Center in Lynwood, another community in the county.
Five individuals were killed in the collision, including a woman who was pregnant and her young kid.
Nicole Lorraine Linton, 37, was detained on Friday on charges of gross negligence vehicular manslaughter.
The registered nurse from Houston will probably face charges from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office on Monday. On a bail of $9 million, Linton is being detained.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened close to a petrol station approximately 10 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles.
Many individuals were thrown from the cars.
Video shows the Mercedes swerving through an intersection and hitting at least two vehicles. These vehicles burst into flames and were sent racing along a sidewalk where they eventually crashed into the corner sign of the gas station. One automobile was reached by a fiery trail. One car was split in two.
According to California Highway Patrol officer Franco Pepi, the automobile sped through the congested junction at a speed of at least 50 mph.
Television reports showed the damaged and burned automobiles, along with a child’s car seat hidden amid the street-covering debris.
Pepi said that eight patients, including the Mercedes’ driver, were transferred to hospitals.
Six kids, ranging in age from 13 months to 15 years old, and a 33-year-old lady were among the minorly hurt victims, according to Pepi.
Veronica Esquivel, a witness to the collision, told CBS Los Angeles that she attempted to assist the infant but was unable.
“I was preparing to pump gas when all of a sudden, I heard the sounds of every collision, followed by the fire explosion, and I saw metal and other objects flying through the air. I so concealed myself behind the pump “To the station, she said.
The infant was thrown from the car, according to Esquival, who told KTLA-TV that it landed close to her.
A baby “literally flew” from the center of the intersection to the center of the gas station at that precise moment, landing directly in front of me, according to Esquival. “When one of the staff members spotted me holding the infant, they rushed over and snatched it away from me. … The infant was dead despite attempts at resuscitation.”
Debra Jackson told CBS Los Angeles that just before hearing a large explosion, she was ready to exit her vehicle to fill up with petrol.
Jackson claimed, “The flames just went over everyone.” “They instructed me to get out of my vehicle since I was attempting to exit it in order to get to the petrol station when it was completely engulfed in flames. I then jumped out of my car and left it parked where it was.”
