Turkish police arrested a man attempting to steal a baby from a southern Turkish hospital after the devastating earthquake

After the devastating earthquake that struck the area, Turkish police caught a man who was attempting to steal a newborn from a hospital in southern Turkey, according to official media.

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake wreaked havoc in southeastern Turkey and portions of Syria, killing almost 40,000 and displacing millions.

A man entered a hospital in the Samandag district of the earthquake-ravaged province of Hatay posing as a police commander, according to the state-run Anadolu news agency.

The medical personnel realised the man’s ID was a fake and contacted the real police, the report said.

Anadolu said that when cops apprehended the individual, they discovered counterfeit police and military ID cards, gold, and money in Turkish lira, dollars, and euros totaling around $6,500.

The agency provided no information on the baby.

Several parents in the area have voiced concern to AFP over rumours of child abductions.

Monday, Turkish Family Minister Derya Yanik said that at least 1,362 children were separated from their homes as a result of the earthquake.
