Tuesday could be coldest night of the year across the UK as weather warnings are issued for snow and ice

The Met Office has issued weather warnings for snow and ice across the UK as Tuesday night is predicted to be the coldest of the year so far. The lowest temperature recorded this year is -10.4C.

However, the mercury could drop to -15C in some sheltered Scottish glens, especially where there is fresh snow cover. Weather warnings for snow and ice are in place across all four nations of the UK, with more expected to be issued as Arctic air sweeps across the country.

Yellow weather warnings for snow and ice will be in place for various regions across the UK from Monday night until Wednesday.

Snow has already begun to fall in Northern Scotland with more than 20cm of it expected to accumulate over high ground in Scotland and more than 5cm is likely to accumulate at lower levels in the north-east of the UK.

People are at risk of slipping and falling on icy patches of untreated roads, pavements, and paths. The UK Health Security Agency has issued a level-three cold weather alert for the whole of England, and advised people to check on vulnerable relatives and to heat their homes to at least 18C.

The Met Office has warned that travel disruption is likely and journey times by car, train and bus may take longer than usual. Snow drifts could occur on Friday.

Temperatures could drop to -1C in Manchester and 2C in London on Monday night, with even colder conditions expected later in the week.
