Discussions are underway this month for a proposal to create a new wind farm in Blaenau Gwent and Torfaen, which could produce enough energy to power up to 44,000 homes.
The potential location for the wind turbines is between Abertillery and Abersychan, although the development is still in its early stages, according to RWE, one of the largest electricity generators in Wales.
The new site, which could include up to six wind turbines, each with a maximum blade height of 200m, could generate up to 36MW of renewable electricity. If approved, the project could be fully operational by 2027.
An informal public consultation is currently underway, which includes two in-person events in Abertillery and Abersychan. Local residents have the opportunity to give their views on the plans.
The proposed site for the turbines is registered as common land, with parts of the project taking place on Mynydd James and Gwastad Common. As a result, RWE will need separate planning permission from the Welsh Government before developing on the land.
The Welsh Government has a goal of obtaining 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2035, and RWE believes that the wind farm could support the Welsh Government’s aim for shared or local ownership.
The local community is invited to provide feedback on the early plans, with events being held at Abersychan’s Millennium Hall on 10 March and Abertillery’s Wyndham Vowles Community Centre on 11 March. The informal consultation process ends on 21 March.
