Time, date and place of King Charles III Coronation

Buckingham Palace has recently shared further details about the upcoming Coronation weekend, which will include ceremonial, celebratory, and community events.

Charles ascended to the throne following the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September 2022, but his coronation will not take place until May 6, 2023. Camilla, Queen Consort, will also be crowned alongside him during the historic event, which will take place inside Westminster Abbey.

The ceremony will have a guest list of approximately 2,000 people, and it is expected to be a smaller affair than the late Queen’s coronation, which was watched by over 27 million people on television.

The coronation will be televised, and a worldwide audience of hundreds of millions is expected to watch. The ceremony will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury and will take place in the morning.

The King has personally chosen the music for the ceremony, which will feature 12 newly-commissioned pieces, including an anthem from Cats composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. Prince William will also take on new titles at the Coronation, including being formally named as the Prince of Wales.

Harry and Meghan have confirmed that they have been invited to the King’s Coronation, but they have refused to say whether they will attend.

There is also speculation about whether Prince Andrew will be in attendance. It has been reported that the guest list may be slashed from 8,000 to 2,000, and discussions have been held about having a more relaxed dress code.

The coronation itself will take place on Saturday, May 6, at Westminster Abbey, and it will be a bank holiday weekend, allowing Britons to celebrate on Monday, May 8, as well.

After the service at Westminster Abbey, the King may head to Buckingham Palace to stand on the balcony with senior members of his family.

Coronation Big Lunches, thousands of street parties, and The Big Help Out will bring communities together over the special Bank Holiday Coronation weekend.

King Charles will wear St Edward’s Crown, which was made in 1661 for the coronation of King Charles II. It weighs nearly 5lbs (2.23kg) and is made of solid gold and features more than 400 gemstones.
