What happens during the accession ceremony?

This morning’s ceremony is the first of many official proclamations which will follow over the next few days to formally acknowledge the death of the Queen and accept Charles as the new King.

The event, attended by privy counsellors, is divided into two parts. In the first part, the Privy Council will proclaim the King and formally approve various consequential orders, including the arrangements for the Proclamation, without the King present.

The second part is held by the King of His Majesty’s first Privy Council. The King will make his declaration and read and sign an oath to uphold the security of the Church in Scotland and approve orders in the council which facilitate continuity of the Government.

Fans of the royal family have been left in tears as they join thousands mourning Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

People of all ages from all over the world have descended on central London already this morning to share in their grief and take strength from the knowledge that a new King is about to be proclaimed.
