Traffic officer KILLED on N4 near Middelburg by a truck

At approximately 19:30 on Monday, January 9, 2023, a traffic officer for the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison (DCSSL) died after being struck by a truck on the N4 toll road.

When the accident occurred at the Middelburg weighbridge, the officer was on duty.

At the time of the collision, he was allegedly directing the truck to the weighbridge along the road.

The examination into the circumstances behind this catastrophe has already begun.

Vusi Shongwe, MEC for Community Safety, Security, and Liaison in Mpumalanga, has extended his sympathies to the deceased’s family, friends, and coworkers.

Shongwe has urged the officer’s law enforcement colleagues not to be discouraged by the incident.

As a means of remembrance for the fallen official, he feels they should continue to exert greater effort against reckless drivers.

He emphasized that truck drivers must cooperate with law enforcement officers at all times.

This is because their instructions transcend all other road signs.

“We have observed that certain truck drivers do not always cooperate with our inspectors. Some truck drivers have an attitude problem because they consistently ignore the rules. Some of these drivers’ attitudes must alter, and trucking businesses must foster a culture of careful and courteous driving in their personnel, said Shongwe.
