The latest “Scooby-Doo” film has Velma as a member of the LGBTQ+ community

Velma Dinkley from “Scooby-Doo” is being represented as a member of the LGBTQ+ community for the first time. In a sequence from the franchise’s latest film, “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!” the legendary heroine, famed for her sharp cleverness and catchphrase “Jinkies!” is shown crushing on another female character.

The group encounters costume designer Coco Diablo in a scene from the brand-new HBO Max Halloween film, which was made available for rent or purchase on Amazon Prime Video on Tuesday. Kate Micucci provides the voice for Coco Diablo.

When Velma encounters Coco, she instantly loses her train of thought, admiring the new character’s “beautiful turtleneck,” “great specs,” “smart” brains, and affection for animals. Velma then exclaims, “Jinkies!” as her cheeks flush and her glasses fog.

Velma admits to Daphne in another scenario that she’s “crushing hard” for Coco.

Velma’s sexuality has been speculated about in the past, but she has never been shown as openly gay until now. Producers and writers of the franchise have previously stated that the character is not straight.

In a post for Pride Month in 2020, “Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated” producer Tony Cervone discussed Velma’s sexuality.
