Velma is LGBTQ+ in new “Scooby-Doo” movie

Velma Dinkley of “Scooby-Doo” is portrayed for the first time as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. In a sequence from the franchise’s most recent film, “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! “, the legendary character, famed for her sharp cleverness and catchphrase “Jinkies!”, is depicted crushing on another female character.

In a scene from the new Halloween-themed HBO Max film, which was made available for purchase or rental on Amazon Prime Video on Tuesday, the gang encounters costume designer Coco Diablo, whose voice is provided by actor Kate Micucci.

Velma is immediately distracted by Coco’s “beautiful turtleneck,” “great specs,” “wonderful” intellect, and affection for animals. Velma then exclaims “Jinkies!” as her cheeks flush and her glasses mist.

Velma tells Daphne in another scenario that she has a “major crush” on Coco.

Velma’s sexuality has been the subject of speculation in the past, but she has not been represented as blatantly gay until now. In the past, franchise producers and writers have stated that the character is not straight.

Tony Cervone, the producer of “Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated,” blogged about Velma’s sexuality during Pride Month in 2020.

“Obviously, I do not represent all versions of Velma Dinkley, but I am a crucial representative of this one. Ten years ago, we made our aims as clear as possible “Cervone wrote. “Most of our fans understood. I recommend that those who did not look more closely. There is nothing new to report.”
