Mindy Kaling’s animated ‘Velma’ cast and roles

Mindy Kaling, an alumna of “The Office,” will voice the title detective.

Velma will be of South Asian descent, and the show will trace the origins of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. brains.

“Growing up, I’ve always related to Velma,” stated executive producer Kaling at a “Velma” panel at the New York Comic Con in October 2022.

The actress remarked, “She was really cute, but not typically attractive; she had extremely thick glasses and a dubious hairdo.” “The series is my absolute favorite, and I’m very pleased to provide the voice.”

Constance Wu will voice the show’s bad girl, Daphne.

According to official reports “Velma” social media accounts, this show’s Daphne will be “renowned for much more than just being attractive.” However, fear not, that is still a substantial portion of it.”

At NYCC, Kaling stated of Daphne, “She’s not demure; she has her own life mysteries that she has to figure out,” describing the character. “And I believe Constance lends a characteristic to the character as well; Constance portrays strength, and so does her vocal acting.”

She continued, “All of the characters go deeply into their family life and other aspects that we didn’t get to witness in the original series.”

Glenn Howerton, star of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” will play Fred, the eventual head of the Mystery Inc. group.

Except for Fred, Kaling stated at NYCC that none of the original “Scooby Doo” characters were distinguished by their whiteness.

“We knew we needed a fantastic comedy performer with empathy,” Kaling said of Howerton, with whom she has previously collaborated on “The Mindy Project.”

Scooby will not appear on “Velma,” but Emmy-nominated voice actor Sam Richardson will lend his talents to Norville, alias Shaggy.

“Without the whiteness, I was very much Fred,” Richardson stated at NYCC of the character with whom he most identified.

Aman, Velma’s father, will be portrayed by Russell Peters.

Peters is a stand-up comedian who has also provided the voices for characters in “BoJack Horseman,” “Family Guy,” and “Bob’s Burgers.”

Sarayu Blue voices Velma’s mom named Diya, who disappears.

Kaling co-created the Netflix popular teen program “Never Have I Ever,” in which Blue most recently portrayed a parent.

Melissa Fumero of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” portrays Sophie, Aman’s girlfriend.

Fumero will also star in the next workplace comedy series “Blockbuster,” which is based on the defunct rental service.

According to the official Twitter feed for “Velma,” Lynch “steals every scene.”

Recently, the actress appeared on Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.” She has also lent her voice to television programs such as “Big Hero 6: The Series,” “American Dad!” and “Ridley Jones.”

Frank Welker, the original voice actor for Fred, will portray William Jones, Fred’s father, on “Velma.”

Welker has also provided his voice for the “Transformers” franchise and other “Scooby-Doo” television shows and films.

Victoria, portrayed by Emmy winner Cherry Jones, is Fred’s mother.

The Emmy-nominated “Nailed It!” anchor Nicole Byer will play Norville’s mother, Blythe Rogers.
