HBO in crisis over ‘Scooby-Doo’ spinoff ‘Velma’

“Velma,” the HBO spinoff of “Scooby-Doo” that has been frequently criticized for sexualizing youngsters and pushing a “woke” ideology, is now in hot water following a crude joke made at the expense of sickle cell anemia patients.

The HBO Max show has been renewed for a second season despite receiving the third-worst reviews in the history of the Internet Movie Database (IMDB).

All of this comes at a time when the show is under fire for a joke that linked attractiveness to sickle cell anemia. According to the website Bounding Into Comics, Fred, a veteran “Scooby Doo” character, informs Velma “I have a sickness that prevents me from recognizing unattractive people…. My physician describes it as “sickle cell for the wealthy.”

The American Association for Sickle Cell Disease announced the joke.

One episode of the new “Scooby-Doo” spinoff contains nudity, graphic violence, and a “oozing corpse.” In January, it had the third-worst rating of all time on the entertainment website IMDB.

The HBO series has been criticized numerous times for concerns like as sexualizing adolescents and promoting a progressive agenda.

During the fourth episode, titled “Velma Makes a List,” the new sitcom included several sexual jokes about minors.

In episode four, the mayor of the town desired high school girls. In a different episode, Velma goes to a strip club and pole dances for her father.

Yet, according to the industry website Deadline, “Velma” will return for a second season: “[CEO of Warner Television Group Channing] Dungey’s team is working on a second season of Mindy Kaling’s adult animated comedy Velma, a Scooby-Doo spin-off.”
