The driver of the gas tanker truck that triggered the weekend explosion in Boksburg did not appear in court on Wednesday and was consequently freed.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), there was insufficient evidence to arrest the driver, as the collision is still being investigated by the police.
On Saturday, the vehicle collided with a low bridge in Boksburg before the tanker exploded, leaving 18 people dead and scores more gravely injured.
The Tambo Memorial Hospital has lost nine employees, while a local mother has reportedly lost four of her children.
The man, 32 years old, who was arrested on Saturday, was not charged.
According to reports, a representative of the NPA told media waiting at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court that there was no case against the driver since provincial police indicated there was insufficient evidence against him.
