Death toll from the Boksburg gas explosion increases to 27

The Gauteng Department of Health reported Thursday morning that 27 people have been killed in the Boksburg truck explosion.

Ten of these are medical personnel from the Tambo Memorial Hospital, located 100 meters from the explosion scene on Saturday morning.

Motalatale Modiba, a spokesperson for the department, stated that just three of the thirteen staff members injured in the explosion are still alive and in critical condition in the hospital.

It was reported on Wednesday that the 32-year-old driver of the gas tanker truck that triggered the Boksburg explosion did not appear as planned in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court since he was freed on Tuesday owing to insufficient evidence.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), all aspects of the accident are still being investigated.

The vehicle collided with a low bridge in Boksburg on Saturday before the tanker exploded, killing ten people and injuring scores more severely.

On Wednesday, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi visited the families of the deceased.
