NEWS FLASH: The Boksburg tanker driver is released for lack of proof

According to reports, the driver of the tanker that exploded in Boksburg on December 24, killing 18 people, was released from prison owing to a lack of proof.

On Wednesday, December 28, 2022, the 32-year-old motorist was set to appear before the Boksburg Magistrates Court.

TANKER DRIVER FROM BOKSBURG IS NOW A FREE MAN

According to reports, the tanker driver was freed from prison on Tuesday, December 27, and did not appear in court on Wednesday. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has determined that there is no case against the driver.

Saturday, December 24th, the 32-year-old was detained at a private hospital where he was receiving treatment for minor injuries.

As previously reported, the tanker became entangled beneath a bridge and began leaking, resulting in a large explosion that caused considerable damage to private and public property within around 500 meters of the incident. As of Monday, December 26, 2022, an additional eight victims of severe burns and injuries had passed away.

The agency reports that nine of the 18 deceased are Tambo Memorial Hospital employees (consisting of one driver, eight nurses)

The South African Police Service (SAPS) accused the 32-year-old suspect with numerous counts of culpable homicide, negligently creating an explosion that resulted in death [Act 26 of 1956, Section 27 (2)], and malicious destruction of property.
