Suspect in the Katlehong Tavern Shooting to appear in Court

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has reported that at least one suspect has been detained in connection with the fatal bar shooting in Katlehong, east of Johannesburg.

The shooting took place on July 8, 2022, leaving two individuals dead and four more injured. Four men burst inside the tavern and began firing haphazardly at customers.

The most recent bar shooting in the nation was in Ga-Rankuwa, which is north of Tshwane. Police claim that unidentified men in a silver polo fired gunfire at pub patrons who were seated at random.

Police are looking into two murder cases and seven attempted murder cases; the shooting’s motive is currently unknown.

The suspect in the shooting at the Katlehong tavern is scheduled to appear before Palm Ridge Magistrates’ Court on July 25, 2022, according to SAPS spokesperson Dimakatso Sello.

It is unclear whether more arrests will be made at this time because police are currently looking into the situation.

Members who may have information pertinent to their investigation are urged to come forward in the interim.

The families of the victims of the shooting at the Katlehong tavern received assurances earlier this month from MMC for Community Safety Cllr Letlhogonolo Moseki that the city would aid them in obtaining justice and ensuring that the shooters would be apprehended and brought to justice.

“We won’t stop until these people are arrested, and they won’t stop until they’re in jail because we’ll never let up because we’ll always be right behind them.”

This type of criminality has no place in our city, thus we must allow it to persist.

Anyone with information that can assist the police in apprehending and successfully prosecuting those responsible for this crime and other crimes throughout the city is encouraged to contact the SAPS or any EMPD precinct close to them.

We can stop crime if we work together, Moseki said.
