Police Minister, General Bheki Cele to visit Soweto tavern mass shooting location

General Bheki Cele, the police minister, will receive a comprehensive report on the horrific shooting that left 15 people dead at a Soweto bar on Saturday night on Monday.

The mass shooting at the bar was one of three that were reported over the weekend in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

The Nomzamo informal neighbourhood in Orlando East is where the Soweto shooting took place. On the same evening, two further persons were shot and killed at a bar in Katlehong. The same night, gunmen broke into a pub in Pietermaritzburg and started shooting, leaving four people dead and eight more hurt.

In Sweetwaters, at the Samkelisiwe Tavern, a shooting took place in Pietermaritzburg.

Provincial police said in a statement that the event occurred on Saturday at around 8.30 p.m.

“Two men entered the tavern and randomly opened fire on the patrons, resulting in at least 12 people being shot. Two people died at the scene and two died later, while the other eight have been admitted in hospital for treatment,” said SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala.

The deceased range in age from 30 to 45. Police are investigating into allegations of murder and attempted murder, she claimed.

Since then, a high-level investigating team has been sent to look into the shooting.

Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the provincial commissioner, has denounced the shooting. The Provincial Organized Crime Investigation Squad is leading a team of investigators that includes members of Crime Intelligence, forensic experts, and a tactical unit.

“The team will be working around the clock to track down and bring to book those responsible for this shooting. In the meantime, we are appealing to anyone who may be able to assist with information, which could assist police in the successful investigation of this case,” said Mkhwanazi.

According to accounts, four unidentified shooters reportedly entered a restaurant in Katlehong and opened fire on customers at a snooker table.

The four men reportedly demanded a gun and started firing indiscriminately at customers, according to eNCA.

Following the high-level meeting, which will also be attended by General Fannie Masemola, National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, a site visit to the crime scene will be done, according to Lirandzu Themba, a spokesman for the Police Ministry.

“The high-level meeting, which is closed to the media, will take place at the Orlando police station,” she said.

Following the deaths of 21 teenagers at a pub in Eastern London, security at bars throughout the nation has been given a lot of attention.
