Snowfall of the season arrives in New York City’s five boroughs

On Monday night, the first significant snowfall of the season arrived in New York City’s five boroughs. Many New Yorkers took to social media to express their excitement, with some describing it as magical. AccuWeather senior meteorologist Matt Rinde estimated that about an inch of snow had fallen in the five boroughs by late Monday night, and forecasters predicted that the city could see 1-3 inches of snow before the rain begins mixing in.

However, Rinde suggested that heavier precipitation could cause the snow to return. This winter has seen a lack of snow in the city, with the only measurable snowfall before Monday night occurring earlier this month when a mere 0.4 inches was recorded in Central Park.

By 11 p.m. on Monday, the snow had mostly turned to slush in upper Manhattan with a light coating over parked cars. While temperatures hovered around freezing, a wintry mix was coming down. Some New Yorkers welcomed the weather as a semblance of normal winter, with one resident saying that he could not remember a year going by without any significant snowfall. While parts of the city could see up to 3 inches of snow, the suburbs to the north and west could see anywhere from 5 to 8 inches, according to forecasters.
