Snowfall in Wales

Snowfall in Wales

This morning, people across Wales woke up to snowfall, resulting in the closure of schools and warnings about treacherous driving conditions.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for snow and ice across south Wales and many parts of southern England from midnight on Wednesday until 9 am on Thursday.

A second weather warning for snow is in place for north Wales from midnight on Wednesday to 9 am on Thursday.

Additionally, a yellow weather warning has been issued for north Wales from 3 am on Thursday until 6 pm on Friday.

The weather warning for south Wales on Wednesday predicts spells of snow that may cause travel disruption from Wednesday into Thursday morning, with an extension into Thursday primarily to include residual ice impacts that may persist into the morning travel period.

The hour-by-hour forecast for Wednesday shows the snow falling lightly across the southern two-thirds of Wales in the morning, with a band of rain across the sea resulting in some coastal areas seeing rain instead of snow.

Hail may fall on coastal areas in southeast Wales, while heavier snow is expected to fall on higher ground in the Valleys and the Brecon Beacons.

By 11 am, the snow is predicted to turn into rainfall in areas such as Gower, Swansea, Bridgend, and possibly Newport, with heavier snow expected to continue falling in the Valleys and further north in Wales.

At noon, the snow is expected to be reaching north Wales, while Swansea sees quite heavy hail or rain.

The forecast map at 1 pm shows the snow falling heavily over much of Pembrokeshire, with temperatures expected to fall by early afternoon, and snow returning to coastal areas like Cardiff and Swansea.

Snow is predicted to cover almost the entire nation except for Anglesey by 3 pm, with a similar picture at 4 pm, and some rain in coastal areas in the south and some hail or snow on Anglesey.

By 5 pm, rain is expected to dominate across the southern coastal belt of Wales from Newport to Swansea and Pembrokeshire, while heavy snow is expected to fall over north Pembrokeshire and the Preseli mountains.

A mixture of rain and hail is expected to take over in much of south Wales by 7 pm, with the snow appearing set to start retreating from around 8 pm.

By 10 pm, much of the snow is predicted to have moved away from Wales, with very little left by midnight. The forecast for Thursday morning predicts rain in the south and snow in the north.
