SNL’s 48th season opener mocks Trump’s cast exit

The 48th episode of Saturday Night Live poked fun at itself and the former president Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago in its return to television.

Miles Teller, the star of Maverick, claimed to be former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning as he provided commentary on the farce that was playing out in front of him.

The show is going through a lot of changes, which might be intriguing. In the meta skit, he said, “Let’s see what they spent the whole summer coming up with. ‘Oh, okay. Trump cartoon. You sure mixed it up.

In May, the comedy program lost eight cast members, including Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Pete Davidson, and Kyle Mooney. Marcello Hernández, Molly Kearney, Michael Longfellow, and Devon Walker replaced them.

James Austin Johnson’s Trump imitation then reappeared while Teller proceeded to remark on the comedy.

Teller questioned, “What about humorous impressions like Anthony Fauci or Lindsey Graham or Rudy Giuliani?”

In response, Andrew Dismukes, posing as Eli Manning, Peyton’s younger brother, said, “Those were all Kate McKinnon.”

Teller proceeded as Peyton by bringing up some “facts” on the program and said, “The show has been rebuilding for sure.”

Let’s examine the statistics up to this point. There were 14 jokes this episode. just three chuckles and one soft laugh. I’ve heard they write till five in the morning,’ he laughed.

When will the show’s scripting begin? Eli joked, ” 4:30?”

Things became even more meta when Teller’s hosting responsibilities were parodied as John Hamm, a three-time SNL host, joined Payton and Eli as a special guest commentator and offered further joking “analysis” of the cast’s mistakes in the sketch-within-a-sketch.

Well, you know, when the presenter isn’t very well-known, they occasionally need to bring in a genuine star… They had to recruit the costar since they couldn’t get the star of the major summer blockbuster, like Tom Cruise or John Hamm.

“Well, I heard they seldom put the hosts in cold open, so when they do, it is unique,” Peyton said in response.

‘Special? Or is it frantic? Hamm answered back.

To laughter, Hamm said when asked what he thought of the chilly open: “I don’t know, but it’s not humor.”

Kenan hasn’t even been utilized by them yet. The Mad Men star jokingly said, “That’s like putting a whole squad of Elis on the field and having Payton waiting on the sidelines.”

Twitter users were interested in the show’s effort to make fun of itself while presenting the new cast members to the audience since it included some self-deprecation.

It was “very meta” for the #SNL cold opener to make fun of how unfunny the season is supposed to be, but Brooke Steinberg noted that it still required two appearances and Miles Teller to make it entertaining.

Another person commented, “ManningCast pulling SNL and all of the changes apart is meta af and I’m totally here for it.”

So I assume #SNL decided to make it a meta joke with Peyton and Eli Manning responding to purposely subpar material in order to avoid having to create any funny jokes for the cold open. Interesting move, someone other said.

The first non-binary cast member has also joined the program.

The 48th season of the program will feature comedienne Molly Kearney, who identifies as non-binary and utilizes they/them pronouns.

The announcement coincides with a wave of seasoned cast members leaving, including favorites Pete Davidson and Kate McKinnon.

Kearney excitedly posted their SNL photo on Instagram on Thursday with the comment, “MEATBRICK MOVED TO NEW YORK!!!!”.

They have experience acting on television; most recently, they played Fern Dannely in the Amazon series adaptation of the beloved 1992 movie A League of Their Own.

Additionally, they have featured in the March 2021 premiere of the comedy-drama series The Mighty Ducks on Disney+.

Kearney was chosen to participate in the annual comedy showcase Up Next on Comedy Central in 2019. A national talent search is used to find comedians for the program.

On Thursday, NBC confirmed that three other comedians had been added to the cast, in addition to Kearney.

This fall, comedy writer Devon Walker, NBC’s Bring The Funny star Michael Longfellow, and Just for Laughs New Face of Comedy recipient Marcello Hernandez will all make their SNL debuts.

It was announced earlier this month that well-known SNL performers Alex Moffat, Melissa Villaseor, and featured player Aristotle Athar would be leaving the program.

Following the previous departures of Pete Davidson, Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, and Kyle Mooney, their departure will substantially alter the composition of the ensemble.

In 2016, Moffat and Villaseor both joined the SNL cast as featured actors, then two years later, they both joined the main cast of repertory actors.

Moffat often appeared on Weekend Update as Guy Who Just Bought a Boat with Colin Jost and Michael Che. He also portrayed a very stupid Eric Trump.

Prior to James Austin Johnson, who is now the prominent player, he briefly starred as Joe Biden, the president.

Villaseor had fewer recurrent appearances, however she did play Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in the show’s political parodies.

She has long been a sought-after voice actress for animated programs, and SNL made advantage of her talent with unusual voices.

Villaseor, who hinted at her leaving by recalling moments from the show earlier in August, will embark on a stand-up tour that will begin in October.

At the same time as Mikey Day, who is reportedly staying, both comedians joined the cast.

Along with Johnson and Sarah Sherman, Athari became one of the prominent characters in the autumn of 2021, although he never had as much screen time as the other two.

At the end of season 47 in the spring, Pete Davidson, Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, and Kyle Mooney already departed the show.

Although a season 48 launch date hasn’t been set yet, new cast members and the returning cast of stars are normally revealed a few weeks before the season begins.

Lindsay Shookus, a senior producer who had contributed to the program since 2002, also departed it earlier in August.

She took over the talent division after being elevated to full producer, where she was in charge of casting future cast members as well as scheduling the show’s presenters and musical guests.
