Long, long ago, The Big Bang Theory spawned a spin-off series centered on one of its most beloved characters, Sheldon Cooper. Young Sheldon was an apt moniker for this. The subsequent film, Young Rock, is a comical depiction of actor-turned-wrestler Dwanye Johnson’s childhood. Now, it appears that we may be getting a Young Dexter, which is rumored to follow the popular serial killer through his teenage years.
According to a report by TVLine from yesterday, Showtime has canceled the renowned reboot Dexter: New Blood, meaning there will be no Season 2. Showtime, which recently announced its merger with Paramount+, will examine “new iterations” of the show, including a prequel that follows a younger version of the iconic character.
According to TVLine, the network is not finished with the Dexter franchise.
The termination of the revival came as a shock to many, as the series was well-received by critics and audiences and averaged approximately 8 million viewers per week across all platforms, making it Showtime’s most-watched series.
After the bungled ending of the original series, which is generally known as one of the most reviled television finales of all time, many viewers turned in to relive the infamous anti-hero.
In her review of Dexter: New Blood, Decider’s Jade Budowski stated, “When a series finale is as bad as Dexter’s, it’s hard to imagine that series ever having the opportunity to redeem itself,” adding that the new episodes are “pretty compelling stuff.” They noted, “Thanks to Michael C. Hall’s masterful ability to slip back into his most well-known role, this new version quickly gets under your skin.”
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and Hall’s reign as the prolific murderer is no exception. Who knows, if the new series is approved, he may appear in flashbacks as he did in previous seasons.
