Shermon Burgess becomes a Muslim convert

Shermon Burgess, a former far-right activist from Australia who once protested against Islam, has now converted to the religion. He had been a controversial figure for his involvement with far-right groups such as the United Patriots Front, Reclaim Australia, and the Australian Defence League.

Burgess once compared Islam and Muslims to cancer and organized anti-Islamic protests. However, he now claims that Islam is the only religion capable of countering the West’s so-called ‘woke’ agenda. He believes that the West has lost its way to alcohol, porn, and drugs and that Islam can rid people of these issues and bring meaning back into their lives.

Burgess confirmed to Crikey that he had taken his Shahada, an Islamic oath, and had been welcomed by his local mosque. He was a member of a metal band called Eureka Brigade, which wrote anti-Muslim songs such as “Border Patrol” and “S*** on a Mosque”. Burgess used to run a Facebook page called the “Great Aussie Patriot,” which had almost 30,000 followers until he took it down in 2015 after followers mocked him.

Burgess had previously criticized the Muslim community and advocated burning mosques. He had quit the United Patriots Front after members of his movement mocked him. Burgess is now vocal about his belief that Islam is the only religion capable of countering what he believes are the sins of the West.

He claims that the West needs to return to purity, family values, healthy masculine, brave male youth, and feminine modest and beautiful female youth.

Burgess switched his beliefs after witnessing the strength of Australia’s freedom movement, which emerged out of the COVID-19 pandemic. He also met with Youssra Rose, the leader of the Muslim Freedom Movement, who provided him with a clearer outlook towards Islam. Burgess is trenchant in his anti-LGBTQ views, describing homosexuality as ‘evil,’ and regularly shares videos from controversial YouTuber and former kickboxer Andrew Tate.

Burgess has faced criticism from all political spectrums for his conversion to Islam. He claims that people from the far-right are upset because he’s not drinking 24 beers on the weekend and screaming about making Australia for whites only. Burgess has praised the Muslim community, stating that they are kind and amazing, and if anyone needs help, they are there.
