A48 Eastern Avenue has been shut down

A48 Eastern Avenue has been shut down in both directions at St Mellon’s due to a police incident.

The roundabout is closed, preventing traffic from accessing the dual carriageway.

The closure comes after police found a Volkswagen Tiguan containing five people reported missing after a night out on Friday.

Tragically three of them were found deceased, with the other two taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Sophie Russon, 20, Eve Smith, 21, and Darcy Ross, 21, who are all from Newport, were at the Muffler bar and club in Maesglas in Newport on Friday evening before friends believe they headed to Trecco Bay in Porthcawl with Shane Loughlin, 32, and Rafel Jeanne-Actie, 24.

The five had not been seen since the early hours of Saturday morning.

Traffic service Inrix said, “The roundabout is closed, meaning traffic can’t get to and from the A48 Eastern Avenue dual-carriageway.” Gwent Police said on Twitter at 4.35 am on Monday that “Specialist officers are supporting the families of those involved and enquiries are ongoing.

If you can help, call us on 101 or send us a direct message, quoting 2300071791. The case has been referred to the IOPC in line with normal procedures.”
