The Mayor of Msunduzi Local Municipality, Mzimkhulu Thobella, recently surprised many with his impressive skills on the football pitch during the Easter tournament in Pietermaritzburg.

Although known for his formal and reserved persona, the mayor let loose during the tournament and gave his rivals a run for their money. This unexpected display of talent proves the adage “never judge a book by its cover.”

The match between the Msunduzi councillors was played as a Curtain Raiser before the final of the Mayoral Easter Tournament.

The Mayor’s XI faced off against the Deputy Mayor’s XI, and the mayor’s team emerged victorious after a stellar display of football, winning by two goals to one. The Msunduzi Municipality congratulated all the teams that participated in the tournament.

Apart from the tournament in Pietermaritzburg, the neighboring city of Durban also hosted its own football games during the Easter weekend.

The event saw the attendance of influential figures such as the President of CAF, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Zizi Kodwa, SAFA President Danny Jordaan, and eThekwini Mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda.

The CAF African Schools Football Championship finals held at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium saw Mayor Kaunda join the other dignitaries. Mayor Kaunda commented that the event was proof that eThekwini remains a top choice for international sporting events.
