Five dead in a serious vehicle collision on the N3 toward Pietermaritzburg

On the 26th of June, teams were dispatched to a motor vehicle collision on the N3 toward Pietermaritzburg.

While a medical team proceeded to investigate the incident, it was noted that the N3 Durban bound was closed and no services were reported in attendance. S.T.A.R.T made their way to the bridge to find a fender bender, and this was due to drivers doing U-Turns and driving up the ramp’s contra flow.

There was no need for medical and the teams stood down and started heading back down the N3, a challenging task as drivers had gridlocked the emergency lanes, forcing the freeway to come to a complete standstill.

Shortly after the decision to return, S.T.A.R.T was notified of a second motor vehicle collision on the top of the Hammarsdale bridge where a truck and car were involved.

On arrival, the teams found one vehicle that had rolled multiple times, having its doors ripped off resulting in its passengers being ejected onto the road. The team was presented with a multi-patient…
