Vehicle collision on the N3 toward Pietermaritzburg leaves five dead and others injured

Teams were sent to a car accident on the N3 heading toward Pietermaritzburg on June 26.

The N3 Durban bound was closed, and no services were reported in attendance, while a medical team investigated the event. S.T.A.R.T. arrived at the bridge to discover a collision caused by drivers who made U-turns and drove up the ramp against the flow.

The teams stood down and began heading back down the N3 after determining there was no need for medical attention. This was a difficult effort because traffic had blocked the emergency lanes, bringing the highway to a total standstill.

A truck and a car were involved in a second motor vehicle collision on top of the Hammarsdale bridge shortly after the decision to go back was made, S.T.A.R.T. was informed.

When the teams arrived, they discovered one vehicle that had rolled many times, its doors ripped off, and its occupants thrown into the road.

A multi-patient situation was brought to the attention of the team. S.T.A.R.T. took charge of the situation and organized a triage to ascertain the number of patients and the gravity of their injuries.

Sadly, it was found that five people had died as a result of their injuries, while other patients had critical to minor injuries.

The control room was informed of the request to dispatch several services to the incident, and as emergency services arrived, they were routed to individuals who required care and transportation to the hospital.

To make sure no one had flown over the barrier, a primary search was conducted on the freeway’s banks.

Later, it was revealed that one patient who was in critical condition passed away as a result of their wounds while being transported to the hospital.

The Freeway was stopped for a while while the reason of the incident was being investigated by SAPS, METRO Police, and RTI, who were all there.
