Maryland mayor Patrick Wojahn has been arrested on 56 child pornography charges and has been revealed to have called Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg his “mentor” and “buddy.” Wojahn, who is gay, attributed his career success to Buttigieg, who is also gay, and who had helped him navigate politics.
The two had struck up a close relationship following their first meeting at a gathering of mayors in Washington DC in 2015. Wojahn stepped down from his role as mayor of College Park after his home was searched by police on Feb 28, and he was arrested this week.
Wojahn and Buttigieg have appeared in several high-profile situations over the years, including at the White House during an event during the Obama administration.
Wojahn has visited the White House about six times since President Biden’s inauguration and since Buttigieg was appointed to lead the Department of Transportation, according to Fox News.
Wojahn was charged with 40 counts of child pornography possession and 16 counts of distribution of child exploitative material. He used his College Park email address as the recovery email for a social media account that was spreading explicit images of children, leading police to tie the account to Wojahn.
In his resignation letter, Wojahn cited mental health issues and said that he was stepping down to “deal with” them. The city of College Park thanked him for his years of service but did not mention the allegations in its initial announcement. Wojahn’s husband, Dave Kolesar, has not commented, and it is unclear if he will face charges.
