Since the start of the holiday travel period on 1 December 2022, more than 2000 motorists have been arrested for different traffic offenses around the nation.

Additionally, Mick Schumacher bids his father Michael a happy birthday.

According to data obtained by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), 2,241 motorists have been arrested for offenses including drunk driving, speeding, driving without a license, and permit violations.

Law enforcement authorities have remained on high alert and conducted over 188 roadblocks at which 611 148 cars have been stopped and inspected.

Over 100,960 traffic violations were issued.

There is evidence that some drivers continue to operate unsafe vehicles on public highways, endangering the lives of other drivers.

Since then, more than 4,200 vehicles have been retired from service.

324 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence.

The most alcohol-related arrests were made between Lever and New Road in Midrand, Gauteng.

The suspect’s blood alcohol concentration was measured at 3.99 mg/1000 ml.

The existing South African level of 0.05g/100ml is already in accordance with the World Health Organization’s international standard.

A motorist was caught driving 191 kilometers per hour in a 120-kilometer-per-hour zone on the N1 highway to Bloemfontein on December 8.

The driver is free on bail of R3,500.

Simon Zwane, a spokeswoman for the RTMC, told Newzroom Africa that severe infractions continue to occur, especially in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and the Western Cape.

Zwane stated, “There is dangerous and negligent driving, a high number of public transport drivers driving without necessary permissions, transporting passengers into prohibited zones, and in some cases, the cars were confiscated.”

ARRESTS FOR OUTSTANDING TRAFFIC FINES
According to him, a large number of individuals with outstanding traffic tickets had been arrested.

Regarding the year 2023, Zwane stated that there would be an increase in arrests for people who have been issued fines but are pulled over and found to have not paid them.

“Today (3 January) may be the last peak in traffic volumes; we saw the initial wave of people returning on December 27 and January 2 – another peak,” Zwane remarked.
