A woman from Ohio named Theresa Cain, 46, reportedly shot and killed her husband, 50-year-old Steven Cain, their 13-year-old son Ethan Cain, and her 74-year-old father William Felton on Monday.
She also gravely injured her daughter Samantha Cain, 20, before committing suicide as authorities arrived to serve the family with eviction papers on their foreclosed home in Ohio Township.
The Clermont County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the officers heard multiple gunshots upon arriving at the house to serve the notice of eviction. Samantha Cain, who survived the shooting, is still in critical condition.
According to Sheriff Steve Leahy, the family was being evicted because of a history of financial problems. Theresa Cain had apparently hidden the financial issues from her family.
Officials recovered a .38-caliber revolver, which they believe Cain used to kill her husband, who was found on a downstairs sofa, while the rest of the family members were found upstairs.
Investigators suspect that the victims were awake during the incident and were aware of what was happening. They also believe that the killings occurred just minutes before the police arrived.
Leahy expressed hope that Samantha would recover and fill in some of the blanks. He noted that the tragedy had shocked the New Richmond School District, where the Cain children attended school.
Superintendent Tracey Miller released a statement expressing the district’s condolences and the impact of Ethan’s death on the school community.
